Why Can't I Remain Composed and Professional When I Play Live

Hi Jared,

It has taken me a very long time to understand that simple straight forward poker is the best approach to take to the game when I play online.  I was far too busy making fancy moves and trying to get into levelling wars that did not exist.  I now play a solid game with moves mixed in at the appropriate moments when opportunities present themselves.

When I play I turn into a complete nut job.  I am generally there with my friends and we are all socialising as well as trying to earn money.  I find myself playing hands that I would never consider online.  Position becomes irrelevant.  When I raise or limp and face a re-raise I am almost always calling.

I know what I am doing and occasionally take a deep breath and then sort myself out but I am inconsistent.  I think one of the main reasons I play this way is I find the action so slow and boring.  I am also a show off.

I would appreciate some tips on how to find consistency.

Cheers

Hey Ching,

It's pretty common that a player solves a problem such as this in one style of poker, but those improvements dont' automatically show up in another.  Typically I've talked about it happening when players move from NL to PLO, or from HU to cash games, but the move from online to live is the same thing.  Plus when the improvements are assumed to be solid enough, you aren't going to pay attention to trying to work on them as you did before.  So you're unprepared for the reality that you haven't learned the improvements playing live, and then have even more trouble because it doesn't make sense why it's still a problem.

The first way to achieve consistency is to own up to the reality that you're going to have to put in some solid focus into integrating the improvements you made into your live game.  Since playing live also mean having a good time with your buddies, I think you have to come a clear decision on what's more important – enjoying your time, or improving your game.  In the short-run you can't do both.  You need the attention to improve, and you need the attention to enjoy – otherwise you're multitasking – trying to do two things at once, and you end up doing both half assed.

Does that help?

Best,

Jared

I agree.  I have two goals at the moment, making money and having a good time.

The good times are getting in the way of making money.

I am going to focus on improving my game and will try to stop messing about.

Ching
