Insight into Emotional Control

I woke up this morning with what I sense in my mind is some major insight.  I may not be able to explain it well enough yet, writing this blog is as much for my learning as yours, but if you stick through it, and it sparks a conversation, I think it can have great value for your game.

I’ve been thinking about the word control for a while now, and this morning realized something that helps to improve the problems I’ve had with it.  In the eyes of some people, I’m definitely way to nit picky/tough about certain things.  I just have a hard time accepting conventional wisdom that doesn’t make sense to me and put a lot of work into to really understanding things I think are really important and uncover details that weren’t known quite as well before. (Read More)

I know there is more to what I'm trying to explain and I’ll probably write a follow-up at some point. Generally what are your thoughts? does it make sense? what do I need to explain better? what do you think I’ve gotten wrong?

Hey Jared, I've enjoyed your videos, so rather than sit back and reap all of the rewards from you, so I figured it's only right to respond to your blog post as you requested.

Intentive control

I view our control more so as having an intention and being aware to follow through on it.  As you said if you try to control things, like say control your free throw shot in basketball, it actually hurts your performance because you’re thinking too much.  This throws off your synchronization between body, mind and basketball.  However that doesn’t mean there aren’t fundementals that you want to be in tuned with unconsciously competently.  For example you may be a good but not great free throw shooter and have the perfect technique, however from time to time your form slips a bit because you get lazy.  This is where having that intention and awareness allows you to recognize you’re making this mistake, and so in the future if you can eliminate this, you’re on your way to unconsciously mastering this skill.

I agree control is about making a decision to do something.  Without the intention of doing so if you aren’t a master at something already, then you will be performing sub-optimally because unconsciously your mind doesn’t automatically do the things necessary to perform at a high level, given it hasn’t been ingrained properly.

As you said you can’t control variance, so the thing you should be trying to control is your reaction to it.  This just comes back to emotional control, improving at it little by little and using good strategies to do so.

My philosophy kind of on free will somewhat ties into this.  We’re sort of a slave to our knowledge.  The decisions we make are based on the stuff we have learned inside of our brain, coupled with genetics which creates our tendencies.  So the only real control we have is having an open mind and seeking more knowledge in a way that will give us the ability to change the decisions we make.  Using intention to make a decision to create new tendencies, unconsciously competently we can change as a person.

On a change of topic, how is your book coming along?  Do you have an idea when it may be released?

Thanks for stepping up and posting some comments, welcome to the site.  And I'm glad to know you've enjoyed my videos!

I actually think we're saying all the same things, or at least my intent was:)  You used some other examples/words to describe it but the fundamental principal from what I can tell were in complete agreement with. That control is something which requires you have enough understanding of what you're trying to control so your intent and focus can be directed in the right way.  You can direct your intent and focus to something new, but that doesn't mean you can control it.

I like your way of linking this to free will.  I agree we are constraigned by our own knowledge and I would add too any parts of our past that is unresolved.

The book is coming along well.  I'm really excited about the quality of the content.   My goal at this point is for it to be released sometime in Nov/Dec, but it's hard to say.  Since I'm self-publishing it I can likely anticipate some more hurdles along the way, but there's a lot more of that process I can control now because I understand it better:)

Thanks!  I'm excited for the day when I'll have it ready.  Just sent 25k words on tilt off to the editor today.  Still lots more to do, but a key step in the process for me.
