1.18.12 – The Mental Game Radio Show

The Mental Game of Poker show today featured Mike Wolf as my guest, or rather, my first on-air client. Today he and I focused on the more serious issue of confidence and fear in his game, which was twice as importance to him given his poker lifestyle. Wolf is famous for having lived straight out of his car, playing poker, living off of what he could score and never knowing what the next week would bring. In order to remain the good-natured, well-adjusted and above all successful poker player that he is today, Wolf had to exercise remarkable mental game discipline, most of it very self-taught. He explains some of the techniques he used, while we also dig deeper and find solutions to his current problems.

NY Giant Doubt

I’m a NY Giants fan. In the run up to the NFC Championship game, I’ve been paying closer attention to what the players and coaches have been saying in the media. Gives me a chance to get a glimpse into how they’re doing mentally, and then connect my estimate to how I see them perform. It’s a great way for me to learn and continue to test my perception. (Plus, with the Giants doing so well, it makes paying close attention even more fun.)

I came across this article about Justin Tuck, the team’s defensive captain. He’s been battling injuries all season and made some interesting comments about how he’s been able to deal with them much better in the past several weeks.

While the injuries haven’t healed, he’s played significantly better because of his attitude towards them. That’s why I’m sharing this article, his situation is very different from what any of you will face, but there’s a lesson to learn.

This is the quote that I keyed in on from the article:

TMGP is a College Textbook

I’m not kidding. The Mental Game of Poker is a college textbook. A professor named Dr. Patricia Cardner from Park University contacted me over the summer to inquire about using The Mental Game of Poker as the text for her class on Poker Psychology. Yes, you did read that right, the class is titled Poker Psychology with the course code of PS 390 to be exact.

Dr. Cardner was looking for a way to get the students excited about psychology. Enrollment was down in the department and she took her love for poker and developed this course. The first class filled up quickly. It was a huge hit and the class has been successful ever since.

It’s pretty funny to think about these 25 or so students going into their college library, rolling over to the psychology section, and then finding The Mental Game of Poker resting between thick textbooks on Neuropsychology and Child Development.

For me, it’s great that I have the chance to influence some college students in the right direction to be thinking about the mental game. Plus, it’s a fun thing to say: The Mental Game of Poker is a textbook. Lol, never thought I’d say that!

In case you’re interested, here’s the course description:
